Hi!

Opposite the house I live in, a new house has been built. Now it is such that from the other house you can nicely see onto my balcony. I want to do something to block the view. And then I thought I could set up trellises and let climbing plants grow on them. Can anyone name climbing plants that grow quickly and also keep leaves in winter...?

Best regards, sennor :confused::)

Climbing plants are of course visually more attractive than the view of the neighbor, but they also attract quite a lot of insects and other critters - I just wanted to mention this here, because for this very reason I have finally removed my ivy after almost 15 years.

MFG

Suitable species: Balloon vine, Cobea, Bell creeper, Morning glory

Hi sennor!

The appearance can really be improved by climbing plants. Climbing plants can be used well on wooden and aluminum walls. But I think trellises are better in this regard, because you don't get the feeling of being "walled in" on your balcony. Climbing tubs are also very practical.

Now to the planting:
Annual climbing plants are best suited, as they grow very quickly during their growing season. Most of them also produce very beautiful flowers or fruits. It is important that climbing plants are provided with climbing aids. A frame made of wood or bamboo does the job. You can also use wire or strings. With annual plants, you have the option to change the appearance every year.

Examples of climbing plants that are good for privacy screening:
- Balloon vine
- Cobea
- Bell creeper
- Morning glory

Best regards,
Horticulture :)

Hello,

I like trellis. Unfortunately, I probably won’t be able to start it until next year, as it is now probably too late. But then I still have plenty of time to get well informed. Do I really have to fear that my climbing plants will attract swarms of insects, or does it also depend on the type of plant?

Best regards, sennor :)

Hello!

I will now continuously say a little more about some climbing plants.

PRUNKWINDE (Ipomoea tricolor):
The Prunkwinde has very striking flowers. Hence the German name. The flowers are funnel-shaped and lush. This plant thrives particularly well in warm summers. When it rains or the sun shines too strongly on the flowers, they close. The flowering period ranges from July to September.
Prunkwinden form very dense foliage. Therefore, they are very suitable as a privacy screen. They love a nutritious, calcareous soil. The soil must under no circumstances dry out during the growth phase. If the Prunkwinde is regularly fertilized, it will accordingly produce many flowers.
Sowing should take place between March and April. The planting distance when transplanting should be about 50cm.

Best regards,
Gartenbau :)

Hi Gartenbau,

that's great that you provide information about the individual plants. As I said: I now have time until next year. And by then I will know a lot more about the different plants and will be able to decide in good conscience for one or the other.

Best regards,
sennor :)
