Hello dear forum,

Today we received an offer from a civil engineer for the excavation.

His task is to shovel the earth onto semi-trailers. The semi-trailers are provided by the landfill.

The civil engineer does not charge his work performance as usual, but takes €5 per ton of earth.

For us, that is 1000t, so €5000 plus VAT.

That sounds much too expensive for us, considering he wants to shovel for 2 days.

I researched on the internet that excavator and driver cost a maximum of €1000 per day.

Therefore, the question arises whether he also wants to make extra profit from our earth or if the €5/ton or €5000 is justified?

cool that cheap? For 5000 euros, where is that supposed to be? Here, some would be happy to stay under 20000 euros.. of course, a lot depends on the quality of the soil but that's a bargain.

And there are no landfill fees or are they billed separately? If the excavator operator really only has to invest the time, then, as you already said, that's 2 days of labor + machine. (1000t are approx. 675 cubic meters, excavation pit 15 x 15 x 3 m?)

Thoughts on this: If you charge by time, you continue to pay even if for some reason there is no tractor-trailer at the moment. Why does the landfill provide the trucks? Did the civil engineer negotiate this in the offer or are they philanthropists? It is not often that you get a fixed price from a civil engineer. Most people wish for exactly that. Look at what you get for the money and not at the distribution of individual items.

We have a 10 x 20 x 3 m excavation pit. Landfill and transport are billed separately and cost us €30,000.

The offer actually states earthworks and sewer works for the basement at €5,000. The construction service description does not mention that shoveling will be charged separately.

We found a cheaper landfill, but it cannot provide as many articulated lorries.
If he charges by the ton, I can theoretically take my time and the excavators can wait.

Well, that's the problem. The civil engineer wants a high frequency. He is doing 3 parties at once here, and €5000 per party is a lot of money. With VAT, that's €6000 per party. The daily rate seems too high to us.
