Today we walked through a 20-year-old residential development. We noticed many heavily soiled and moss-covered roofs. It is especially noticeable on red roofs. We also wish for a red roof. Preferably natural red. But I really don't like these high-gloss roofs. Are roof tiles today more resistant to dirt? What should one consider when choosing? Best regards, Steffi.

In general, concrete roof tiles are more susceptible to moss than clay roof tiles. Regardless, IMHO external factors (shade, weather, trees, ...) are more significant than the tile itself.

What you really put on the roof is IMHO totally irrelevant, it is just an optical question/matter of taste. With concrete tiles, you generally have a 20-year warranty, so what could go wrong?

Make sure you are delivered the correct color and finish

The shinier, the less moss – but I would also think that trees and shade have the greatest influence on the external appearance.

The color red no longer looks nice not only on older roofs. Red cars without metallic paint or red parasols also suffer from UV radiation. I would have loved to have a red roof, but my husband was strictly against it, so we had to agree on a different color.

I don't think that applies so generally. My parents' red roof looks great after 15 years. Of course, it's not old yet, but I constantly see attractive red roofs that are most likely even older.

Unfortunately, I cannot say. In a new development area nearby, the houses have been standing for almost 10 years and they no longer look nice. On the street, there are also two houses with red roofs. And these roofs are also no longer nice.

However, I do know of a house with a blue, high-gloss roof concrete tile, which even after 10 years still looks as if it has just been newly roofed.
