Hello everyone,

we are currently thinking about how to design the reinforced concrete ceiling in our new building. Besides the usual non-woven wallpaper and/or painting, we have now also considered sticking ceiling panels made of Styrofoam. However, I wonder why this, compared to the very simple method of filling/sanding/wallpapering/painting, is rarely found in any house or apartment.

Are there valid reasons for this? What speaks against such ceiling panels and what in favor?

Best regards and thanks in advance

Reasons in favor? None. Against? - Plastic on the ceiling - Panels also need to be filled and wallpapered/skim coated, otherwise you won’t get a smooth ceiling - More expensive than doing the final treatment directly - Plastic burns well 50 years ago, panels with texture like this were used. Something like this: In an expensive newly built home, it has the charm of... nothing. Each panel is also individually visible.

The downside is that you can only remove them again with a lot of effort. We had to do this in my husband's former apartment. My son sanded for days to get the glue off.

I have personally lived for many years with such panels on the ceiling (in some rooms) in my old parents' house from around ~1750. And as my predecessors wrote, there is no argument for it. Ugly as sin, hard to remove, plastic on the ceiling. That junk is even available as decoration for walls now ... creepy. There are so many more beautiful options. By the way, I would definitely want to "improve acoustically" reinforced concrete ceilings.

In case of doubt, it is a matter of taste. If it fits the living style, for example, one can imitate a coffered ceiling. It also provides a bit of insulation. As already mentioned, the removal can become a struggle.

My tenant installed them. Supposed to absorb sound. He likes them. They had them in their previous rental apartment as well. Advantage is that it has remained flawless for 20 years. Never need to paint.
