First of all, hello to everyone here in the forum. I came across this forum through Google search, and being a big Ikea fan myself, I thought maybe you could help me with my thoughts/problem. :)
I have a 4x4 Ikea Expedit with a desk attached, the long shelves horizontal to the floor, and I want to put a 2x4 Ikea on top so that in the end I get a 4x6 Ikea Expedit. Now I want to have as few thick outer parts as possible, definitely not two on top of each other, as this significantly spoils the look.
My thoughts so far are as follows: Unscrew the upper outer part of the 4x4 and put the complete 4x2 on it. Then either glue it with Sikaflex (polyurethane) (removability?) or fasten it with dowels into the 2 outer shelves. In the second option, I would still have to drill holes in one end strip of the 4x2. Does it do that with or is it too soft or hollow inside?
This way I would only have one thick end part in between and both shelves would be firmly connected. PU should actually be removable from a smooth surface if necessary (right?) after it is cut off the other part with a scalpel and holds firmly.
By the way, with the 4x2 shelf I remove the shelves from the middle 4 compartments since the printer is supposed to go there, which in my opinion should not be a problem as nothing is lying on top anymore.
Is there anything against my considerations? Or is there another way to leave out all the outer parts in between that I haven't thought of? I am grateful for all suggestions! :)
