Architect - Contract required?

I have a general question! Do you need a contract with the executing architect for the planning and remodeling of a house? Contracts are usually made only with the executing companies via a work contract, right?

Is an architect who waives a contract with the client unprofessional?

Serious question? Contracts can also be made orally, but then they cannot be proven if in doubt, and the architect was never at fault (or does not get paid because he was never commissioned...) P.S. Even when buying a bread roll, you conclude a purchase contract.
