All-glass railing prefabricated kit or rather a metalworker?

Hello,

I have a 4m long concrete retaining wall, about 25cm wide. We want to install an all-glass railing as fall protection.

The local metalworker offers this for €3500 - €4000 gross.

Now I have come across kits. With certain providers, you can configure the railing online and it is then sent to you ready cut (mounting rails, mounting materials, and glass panes). According to the assembly videos, it looks as "easy" as I imagine. The mounting rails are basically U-profiles with a screw that goes inside to the middle, which is anchored with dowels in the concrete wall, so from above. Insert rubber, insert pane, insert clamping piece, more rubbers.

I am not worried about the installation itself; together with my father-in-law it will be no problem.

What I am much more wondering is whether these kits are actually any good or rather "junk." If it ultimately is the same material that the local metalworker would install, I would just do it myself. The kits cost €1700 from the provider Huero and €2545 at Geländerladen.de.

Ultimately, I find the providers via Google. Does anyone perhaps know a similar provider from personal experience?

Hello,

I have installed a 3.90m long railing on the side here. It consists of 2 glass panels and a profile custom-made to size. Basically, it’s doable. You should take a little time for it though. I had problems because some plaster had gotten under the mounting rail, at the end of the installation the cover profile didn’t fit... It took me a while to find that. Also, due to a mounting error, one of my two laminated safety glass panels broke (too much tension when wedging after insertion). That suddenly cost an extra €600. I find your metalworker’s price quite fair. If he breaks the panel, it costs you nothing extra. My dimension was more like: €3000 for doing it myself – €8000 for having it done. Then you don’t mind the broken panel so much...

What if a mistake happens when taking measurements? In that case, a dealer surely won't accept a return, right? That alone would be worth a higher price to me. On-site measurement by the person who installs it, and if something doesn't fit, please fix it. And what about the warranty that it will hold?

Maybe you first install the profiles and wait to see if they are straight, and then order the glass. Often something comes up that you don’t expect beforehand, that is the only problem I see with your plan.
For example, we have a glazier on site who also does shower walls etc. He has the glass and orders the matching profiles as needed. Maybe it could be an option the other way around.
If I were doing it myself, I would probably choose the profiles myself and hold them in my hand beforehand.

Really, almost 2 meters per pane? Wow. What kind of glass did you use and what are the dimensions?

We will soon start with our outdoor stair railing, about 5m with steps, approximately 60 euros per post for surface mounting. I inquired roughly about the glass panel, it costs about 180 euros in our shape, which is 10mm laminated safety glass with polished edges in matte white.

Don't be surprised, these are L-shaped stones and not the steps

First the posts will be set, then measured and ordered.

I estimate a maximum of 2000 euros for everything.

Laminated safety glass made from tempered safety glass. 16.76 mm. 121 cm high, 193 cm wide.

95 kg per pane. When calculating, don't forget a few proper glass lifters and snacks for the helpers.
