3-layer parquet instead of solid wood planks in the offer

Hi, actually a silent reader, but now I do have a question. I am renovating an old half-timbered house step by step and trying to orient myself on the materials from the construction period. That’s why oak solid wood plank flooring was planned. Since the floor is still quite good, only a few planks have been repaired, and the floor has to be raised anyway because of the other rooms, the plan and what was discussed with the floor layer was: sand the old floor level and screw the new planks onto the old ones. I would like to avoid glue, filler, plastic. Now I receive from him an offer invoiced at €90 in which he wants to glue 3-layer parquet on a filled floor at about €150 / sqm. This corresponds 0% to the order and, in my view, is also quite expensive for that. (both per sqm and for the offer) How to proceed with this craftsman? It feels like: I create an impossible offer that will never be accepted and have it nicely paid for...

Welcome to the forum, that reads completely jumbled. "Offer invoiced and payment requested?" What is the initial situation, what was offered, what was commissioned, what was executed, what is the invoice for now, please sort it out once.

For an old half-timbered house, I would personally prefer bare floorboards. I would not screw them down but nail them, especially if they are to go on the old boards in, for example, the cloister. When nailing, they may squeak sometimes; screwing can also tear the wood. For floorboards, I would prefer chamfered edges. In any case, you will have joints that change, which can be very clearly visible at certain times. Better to be bold right away than to try to hide something that simply can’t be done.

I would be very meticulous to ensure that in the interaction between old and new wood, no sign of worm infestation is visible anywhere. Where the worm in the old wood has already broken down too much protein, it might find some in the new wood.

The construction with presumably chipboard panels in at least two layers in the cloister beneath a multilayer parquet allows the chipboards to be laid floating, only needing to be screwed together. The separation makes the whole thing independent of the movements of a half-timbered house. Here, you can give the top layer a perfect appearance, just like in new construction. That has its appeal too.

I wish you a Merry Christmas!

Best regards from Gabriele

Thank you very much for the detailed answers.

Hello,
The starting point is an old house with old floorboards, onto which new floorboards are to be laid.
With the clear specification: solid floorboards, no glue.
Offered was: 3-layer parquet, glued.
Nothing has been executed so far.
After inspection, the floor installer created an offer that corresponds 0% to what was clearly desired. In addition, I find the requested 150 €/sqm quite high.
He now wants 90 € for creating this "offer."
I would rather not place the order now, as it does not meet my expectations. I am willing to pay for a certain amount of effort, but find 90 € for an offer that has nothing to do with the specifications somewhat inappropriate.

,
There are no worms or rot.
Particle boards, etc. should not be used. An appearance like in a new building is not desired; it is a 180-year-old house, and you are allowed to see that.
Gaps belong to it, just like wear on cement tiles and uneven clay plaster.

I would just call again and say that you ordered an offer for solid wood planks and not for parquet and ask for a corresponding one. And is the 150 €/sqm with material? Then that is currently okay with the prices. There are currently quite some delivery problems with solid wood planks.

I only know it as offers being free of charge and without obligation. Only after prior announcement and corresponding services/planning services can offers be subject to charges.
