Hi dear forum,

Our tile setter is almost finished with the bathrooms and we have discovered damage to a floor tile (piece broken off) and a small damage to the tile next to it. Unfortunately, the tile setter wants €1000 (!!!) for the replacement of both tiles. Is this price justified? We do not know who is responsible for this damage since several trades were working in the house at the same time. The tile setter is also using this as an excuse. Allegedly, you have to reckon with 2 men and 8 hours of work.

Is it also possible to consider a repair? Is there a professional method?

Unfortunately, the damage is in the direct entrance area.

Someone obviously dropped something there. Annoying.

But the spot is rather small, less than 1 cm, and therefore hardly noticeable. When looking from a height of 1.60 m as a person.

There are excellent industrial adhesives today with which I would glue the broken-off corner back in place. Once grouted, it is no longer visible. The tiny damage on the other side disappears after grouting. That is why I would not have the tile removed. Who knows what else might happen then.

Especially since it wouldn’t even be noticeable with this tile.

Are you building with a general contractor (GU) or with individual contracts? With the GU, it doesn't matter which trade caused the damage; the GU bears the risk until handover. Otherwise, this would probably be a case for the construction all-risk insurance.

We are building with a GC, but the tiler was contracted by us. We are shortly before the handover of the house.

I completely agree with Buchsbaum. That can be repaired very easily. For me, the tiler had to redo 3(!) tiles (well, "only" 30x80) but he did that alone in 1 hour. 1000€ is not justifiable, even for this size.

To be honest, the tiles have not been grouted yet and therefore you have not accepted the work yet. Thus, the tiler has the problem.
