Hi everyone,

which paint is best for painting lime plaster? We will have lime plaster throughout the whole house.

Maybe there is a painter among you who can give me some advice/tip or even recommend a paint.

Hello Marcel,

I am not a painter myself, but we faced exactly the same problem. We also have a lime-cement plaster throughout the house. A painter friend recommended a paint from Brillux - Kalisil 1909 (it is quite expensive in comparison, but it preserves the breathability of the plaster). Are your walls finished to a Q3 or Q4 level? And there is also a breathable primer for this paint, also from Brillux.

The usual suspects like Sto, Caparol, Keim, Kreidezeit...... Everyone has a different philosophy. I would buy my paint from the painter or specialist paint shop anyway and especially pay attention to opacity and scrub resistance.

Lime and lime like to be together ;)

On a Lower Bavarian farm, many years ago I once painted a room with lime (because there was lime on it before).
At some point, the sun shone in and the color shone so beautifully and radiant that I have "adored" lime ever since.
That’s why we also plastered our house with lime plaster and painted it with lime ...

BUT:
The lime paint was terribly expensive, has a rough surface (which I don’t like) and some of the buckets had a thousand crumbs in them (which the painter didn’t pay attention to) ... besides, the sun always shines in here and I have never noticed this "radiant effect" here ...
Lime paint used to be cheap and the surface can be smooth.

It can often be read that lime paint is something great .... my experience is mixed and lately totally frustrating. But to this day I really don’t know where the problems come from or what you have to pay attention to in order to avoid them.

Keim Innostar - it preserves the open-porosity of the lime plaster and has a pleasant white that is not too bright. It is also easy to work with and has very good coverage and opacity. I painted our entire house with it (one diluted primer coat, one topcoat) and am very satisfied. Pure lime paint sometimes tends to chalk.
