Windows in new construction - What size, quality, and roller shutters?

Hello,

we are planning to build a single-family house.

The construction company has now created a plan and has specified large double-wing terrace doors with a width of 173 cm and a height of 215 cm.
Is this width sufficient to comfortably go outside with only one door open? The height of only 215 cm also seems low to me, especially since the ceiling height will also be "only" 250 cm and it might look odd if the door reaches up to 20 cm below the ceiling.
What width and height do you recommend for double-wing terrace doors? I am thinking of something like 200 cm x 230 cm. What did you decide on?

The construction company says that plastic windows with a colored foil coating on the outside are sufficient and that the coating will not come off or wrinkle over time.
Is that the case nowadays? The surcharge for plastic windows with an aluminum shell on the outside is quite significant and I don’t know if it’s worth it.

Are aluminum roller shutter slats mandatory in new buildings or are plastic roller shutter slats sufficient? Would you pay the extra cost?

Best regards
Robert

It’s all a question of price. In my opinion, double-leaf patio doors are not optimal. At the latest when you need an insect screen, you’ll think of me. One fixed leaf and one tilt-and-turn. I agree with you on the width. A 1 m door has an opening of 85 cm. You can easily go in and out with the doormat. The height of the window depends on the builder. They often specialize in one manufacturer of roller shutter boxes. With 2.5 m ceiling height, 2.3 m windows are not possible in my opinion. Ask the construction company what the maximum can be. I would prefer it that way, too. But as I said, it’s all a question of price. The 1.73*2.15 are probably the standard dimensions of his window manufacturer. Nothing is impossible. There are also floor-to-ceiling windows. ;)

I also believed that from my window manufacturer. Bought Schüco windows with foil. After only 15 years, I have the first wrinkles and peelings on the west gable.

For my 2 m wide window, I ordered aluminum. Everything else is plastic. For 1.73 m width, plastic is sufficient in my opinion.

Maybe you can also order a small fixed leaf and a 1 m door?

Regards from the hillside house

Height 2.15 is standard with a ceiling height of 2.50.
Width is initially chosen to suit the house type and style, house width, and then adapted to the room size and its use. The overall windows should harmonize together. They also serve to design the rooms and the house.
At 1.73 there will probably be two 80 cm doors. With a tray or something else in hand it will already be difficult.
In our case, we went with 2 meters each and simple doors at 100 cm. Only two side rooms have 80 cm doors: you can notice the difference there.

Sufficient and fits!

Yes, already a good generation ;)

Why should they be mandatory? Ours work fine in plastic as well.

Thank you very much for the answers.

We have also considered having one fixed wing and one as tilt-and-turn, and it would not be a disadvantage for us since only the same door would be opened anyway. Since we probably won't have a ventilation system and will still have to ventilate ourselves (solid house), the question arises whether the rooms (affected would be kitchen/dining room, living room, children's room) can still be ventilated quickly enough (each room has 2 floor-to-ceiling doors/windows). Probably yes.

When I think about it, 2.15 m high patio doors might not be so bad after all. I have to test them myself. A width of about 2 m is desirable if you often go through the door.

Allegedly, plastic roller shutter slats offer less heat protection compared to aluminum roller shutter slats, worse sound insulation, poorer burglary protection, are less durable, and can deform more under heat. In addition, aluminum shutters are recommended from certain window widths. For us, only heat protection and deformation under heat would be important.

On the ground floor, only venetian blinds are to be installed anyway, so the question only arises on the upper floor. Since we will have large and probably now 2 m wide windows facing south in two rooms, we will probably use aluminum roller shutters there. For the other rooms on the upper floor, it will probably depend on how high the extra cost would be or whether it is visually noticeable.

But it is reassuring to know that roller shutter slats made of plastic are basically not bad.

And how do you want to clean roller shutters behind fixed glazing? Hmm! They darken, sound insulation should work differently, burglary protection: whoever wants to get in, gets in, and hehe, I have never seen a deformed roller shutter. Somehow quite a few pub myths are thrown around here. And with venetian blinds, do you have better burglary protection? Better sound insulation? Before I think about these buzzwords, I think about controlled residential ventilation. Oh, only on the upper floor.. And why is one suddenly planning 2-meter-wide windows in the south if you could plan it differently to protect yourself from “deformed roller shutters” through planning? Somehow for me the cart is put before the horse here. I also simply miss the question: “are there disadvantages of plastic slats in roller shutters?” You should first plan the house, adjust the window widths accordingly, and the details afterwards. Whether you then take aluminum or plastic will then be decided by the budget. What should be noticeable visually?

From your posting history, I get the impression that you participate rather weakly in your topics; and we do not know the plan (so now we are supposed to talk about color like the blind). That makes me little inclined to answer you. For the sake of the readers, I will do it anyway. I come from a butcher dynasty and was a window manufacturer (aluminum). I will not become a vegetarian, and PVC windows in my own house only go in the toilet and the utility room. Regarding the windows and roller shutters (as has probably been said several times) in general: 1. Patio doors under a width of 250 never as sliding elements; at width 173 (should probably be nominal dimension 176?) I would split them asymmetrically and take both wings only as tilt windows (another window can do tilt-and-turn). 2. On the ground floor (and on the upper floor, where one can access via the garage roof) the stricter RC class and aluminum roller shutters. The darker the frame color, the more urgently it is recommended to prefer coextrusion over foil lamination (e.g. Gealan).
