Hello everyone,

We would like to level our property a bit and raise it by about 1 meter.

Which soil / soil class is best suited for this before the topsoil is applied?

How thick should the layer of topsoil be so that the lawn grows well?

Thank you and best regards

Is it just lawn on it?
Shallow-rooted / deep-rooted?
On rubble base (+ topsoil on top), beech hedges have always died here, while laurel thrives without problems.

Common is about 25cm of topsoil, a compromise between quality and cost.

Look for a building materials supplier; they often offer shredded rubble of defined grain size
(I would choose max 5cm) and deliver it.

Nobler/more expensive is obviously selected gravel.

Trees hate this trick. I would rather recommend a sand clay mixture.
Rainwater doesn’t just run through it and vegetation also finds it better than
construction debris.

So, in addition to lawn, shrubs/hedges and trees should also be planted in the border area.

I do not want to process construction debris.

Some people in our immediate vicinity have earth masses to give away in larger quantities due to new buildings. There are various soil compositions here.

Is sandy soil compressible enough so that it ultimately holds and still drains enough water?

Can broad soil classes be designated that are suitable for filling and also soil classes excluded that are absolutely unsuitable for filling, e.g. clay-like soil?

Clay is waterproof Sand lets water seep faster than you can watch. Loam is a clay mixture. Heavy soil holds water for a long time. Mixing it with sand results in good subsoil.

I could now get the following soil for filling... Is it suitable or not as a subbase for the topsoil? About 1 meter is to be filled.
