Hello,

I want to pave my driveway soon. Now I am considering how deep I should lay the gravel here. For frost protection, I will have gravel with a grain size of 0/32 delivered. I am thinking about 20 to 25 cm – is that sufficient?

Thank you very much for your information.

Hi Marcel.

If the paved path is to be driven on, a 20 cm thick layer of crushed stone is sufficient. Your mentioned grain size is adequate. However, beneath that, a frost-free construction, the so-called substructure, must be made. This is necessary to prevent your pavement from heaving during frost or thawing conditions. The topsoil must be removed and replaced layer by layer with crushed stone. The whole thing must be well compacted. The frost depth varies between 80 and 120 cm depending on the location.

I suggest you also obtain the technical information from the manufacturer of the paving stones. They can certainly provide information about the bedding and jointing material as well. I believe there are also different processing methods between the types of paving stones.

Hello,

I still have a question regarding the base course. Yesterday, a building materials supplier offered me a mineral quartzite mixture 0/32 and another one offered a basalt with mineral mixture 0/32.

Are there differences here and what is recommended?
Thank you very much.

Hi Marcel,

It is very important that you follow the regulations of the paving manufacturer. That is what my husband did back then and it worked out well. We had a problem and it was the ants. We were advised to use [Split], which my husband also did. It still looks really good today.

Best regards
