Which material for light cove?

I would like to have light coves installed in the living room and bedroom of my new building. Now they come with styrofoam, rigid foam (?), HDPE, aluminum, regular drywall boards, etc. Of course, everyone writes about how great their material is. What is actually the "right" material for this? And does it have to be installed before the interior plaster or only before painting?
