Hello everyone,

I am currently renovating a semi-detached house. My plan is to equip (almost) all the rooms with up-to-date communication lines. What do you think are the most sensible cables to use? I was thinking of 2x CAT7, coaxial cable (and telephone line) for each room. I also want to keep the option open to replace them later. So I thought of laying the cables in M25 corrugated pipes, 2 in each room. Additionally: Who has experience pulling cables and could give me some tips? Unfortunately, the cable routes can only be realized with a few bends. The length of the pipes would then be about 3-15m.

Thanks in advance for as many hints and tips as possible...!

At least you can completely do without telephone lines. Firstly, there’s a mobile phone, and secondly, telephone lines are nowadays realized via LAN cable. You can handle the rest however you like. Does a coaxial cable have to be installed everywhere? 2xCAT7 = 2x duplex?

I am also facing a renovation and will have Cat.8 installation cables (AWG22) installed (including Cat.8 keystone modules), as well as high-quality coaxial cables, but no telephone lines.

With Cat.7 you certainly can't go wrong now (but I wouldn't go below that) and of course Cat.8 costs a bit more and you currently don't gain any concrete benefit from it. But I never want to change the cables installed under plaster again and the current investment surplus relative to the total investment seems more than justifiable to me. You can rather save on the infrastructure behind it (switch, PCs, monitors, NAS, ...) and upgrade in a few years. Two connections per room are certainly recommended, even though nowadays you can get very far with good WLAN coverage.

I was wavering for a while regarding the coaxial cables, since I already use an IPTV connection for TV and linear TV is increasingly being displaced by streaming services. But looking ahead to the next 5 to 10 years, I estimate that I will still benefit from a satellite system.

I would advise against telephone lines, since nowadays only VoIP is used anyway. So either you use VoIP phones or you have a DECT base station like the Fritzbox or the Gigaset Pro N670 IP DECT in use, which in turn must be connected to the LAN.

Regarding cable pulling: I have never done it myself, but a few days ago I happened to come across a YouTube video demonstrating the Wiro cable pulling aid system. It looked very good.

It depends on what the goal is and what you ultimately want to have. Simply throwing cables around without a plan doesn't really make sense.

A double socket in every room is OK. For TV and office, I would always do 2 x double sockets. Also don't forget rooms like hobby room and garage.

Additionally, provide one access point on each floor. Best on the ceiling. With POE, you don't need a power outlet nearby.

Are cameras or outdoor access points planned?

Don't forget the door intercom either.
