Hello everyone,

I am completely new here and at the beginning of the construction planning phase.
We currently live on a 900m² plot in an old house. Our plan currently is to tear down the house and build a new one.
The question I am currently asking myself is: where to go with my partner, dog, myself, and belongings during that time?

Does anyone have tips, experiences, or similar? I am concerned that it might even fail exactly because of this.

Thanks and best regards!

Brainstorming: store household goods, living container, small apartment, parents, caravan?

My brother and his family sold their house and built a new one at the same time. During the transition period, they rented a holiday apartment in the town. They stored the furniture temporarily at our parents' place. It was only for a period of 3 months, not particularly pleasant with 3 children in a 3-room apartment, but it worked – and it was a foreseeable period. I think it will probably take longer for you. For longer than a year, I would rent an apartment – if possible and, of course, clarify with the landlord beforehand that you will move out again fairly quickly.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks in advance. Well, that is of course also important - how long will the house construction actually take. In my research regarding living situations during house construction, I have mostly read many negative reports about living containers, caravans, etc. Of course, for a year or longer, that is certainly not a good situation. :/

From when can one approximately move into a house? Actually only when all construction work is completed? Or does it depend on the type of construction and the construction company?

So I probably just have to hope to find an apartment for us and the dog for this time. Hopefully it won't fail because of that..

What is there to clarify. Notice period is 3 months. Since building a house will probably take longer than 3 months, a temporary apartment for 9-12 months is certainly the right choice. A holiday apartment is far too expensive.

Hi,
we had/have the same situation. 4 people, 2 dogs, and 2 cats, and with that, temporary solutions were basically ruled out, except for rental apartments/houses, but unfortunately, that failed for us due to the completely empty real estate market.

We solved it by building the new house as a replacement directly next to the old one and then tearing down the old one after the move. Maybe something like that could work for you too?

However, we are in an outer area, where it is a bit more complicated anyway.

We are now glad that we did it this way because, for example, we had to wait 9.5 months for the building permit... that wouldn't have worked with a caravan/container at all.

Best regards
