Hello,

I am hoping for help from experienced Ikea DIYers. I have a Vika Amon table, which is not exactly solid. (Surface: hardboard, frame: chipboard, ABS plastic, filling/spacing material: paper, bottom: hardboard). However, I would like to drill a fairly large (1 cm) hole in it to attach a monitor mount. I wonder if it will hold up? Or will it not hold because of the paper?

Help, thank you.

for the VIKA tabletop, I would personally prefer not to drill a hole  because it is probably constructed like LACK, (and therefore so light) the inside consists of cardboard and air. so as I said, better leave it

That’s fine. You just have to accept that this is not exactly a bomb-proof mounting for the monitor. But I don’t think you need that for a monitor anyway. You don’t hold on to it. You probably have to trust yourself to be able to drill with a bit of feel. Because when the drill bit comes out the bottom of the plate, if you apply too much pressure, the plate will more or less break out at the bottom. This will cause anything but a round hole on the underside of the plate. If you succeed, just put a sufficiently large washer between the nut and the underside of the plate before tightening, otherwise when tightening (and please not too tight) the plate will be pressed in (it’s not solid). So, that’s it. Have fun tinkering!

Hey,

so yes, if I’m not totally mistaken, the tabletop is constructed like the LACK series. That means the top is hollow inside! It consists internally of air and cardboard strips arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Usually, you have small pre-drilled holes at certain points underneath the top; only at these points is the top "solid."

But what do you mean by monitor mount? If it’s just some kind of elevation, it doesn’t necessarily have to be screwed on?! I can’t really imagine anything underneath right now..
