Hello,
I want to use my Billy shelf as a bathroom cabinet and place a scale underneath it. What do you think, can I simply saw a cutout in the front panel at the bottom so that I can slide the scale underneath? How about the stability, could it be lost because of that?

Best regards
Michael

Hello!

I would be more concerned about water resistance than about stability.
Billy is not intended for the bathroom, so moisture (water splashes, small puddles on the floor) could cause the wood to swell.
It is only veneered particleboard, and the particleboard was probably not glued to be waterproof...

Not only that, even pure moisture, like that which occurs when showering, can cause the Billy to swell. Probably not immediately, but over the months. It also depends on how big the bathroom is, how the humidity exchange works, and so on...

okay thanks for the tips. I have to check, we already have a Billy standing in our bathroom. now we need a bigger one, let's see if anything has already swollen. it is also not supposed to be the final solution, for the moment it is just the cheapest.

so better not to saw anything out, you think?

regards

As I said, it depends. If it's just a temporary solution and the shelf then ends up in the trash (because it might no longer be usable), it doesn't matter. But if it is supposed to be used for another room later, I would think about it.

yes, well for the dark basement it should definitely still be enough as a shelf afterwards.

and the recess should actually not have a negative impact on the stability for the time being, as far as I understood.
