Two house numbers or just one? What advantages does each provide?

Hello,

I have a rather unusual topic. We have bought 2 plots of land, which consist of a total of 3 parcels. Now I wanted to apply for my house number and was asked how I would like it. The options are:

1. Parcel A and B house number x and parcel C house number y
2. Parcel A house number x and parcel B and C house number y
3. Parcel A and B and C house number x

Actually clear: Of course one house number, since in the end it will be one property (the house is finally on all 3 parcels), BUT:
Are there maybe advantages if I take 2 house numbers? Since I only need one water/sewage connection, maybe I only have to pay the fee based on the area of one parcel?

Are there any other aspects?

If the house really stands on all three plots and there are no plans to build another one later, I would definitely take only one number for all three plots. Otherwise, you will struggle with wrong house numbers and wrong addresses for the rest of your life. Once there are two possible house numbers circulating for a single house, you will surely have a lot of fun... Then try explaining to the telecom technicians or utility companies that you need only one connection, at number 12 and not at number 11...

Best regards,

Andreas

There is no federal law that regulates the way house numbering is done, and in NRW there is also no state law, so each municipality can establish its own rules. Usually, only the main entrances of a house are assigned their own house number, that is, where there is a doorbell and a mailbox. This has also proven effective in practice. The builder normally has no choice here. Perhaps the caseworker has not yet fully understood your specific situation. But even if you have the choice, you should only take one number, as it is highly unlikely that the municipality bases its fee and property tax calculation on a single assigned house number.

That probably varies very, very much. The house in which my parents have an apartment (a total of 3 or 4 apartments, so not a huge block) even has 2 different addresses (streets), because it is a corner house.

I can fully agree with that. We have exactly such a case with us. Corner plot, according to the development plan we are Street B No. 1. But we placed our driveway on the other, more sensible street and are therefore Street A No. 12. In all applications and so on, however, it said Street B No. 1 back then, and the telecom took 5 months to sort that out. They kept saying there was no telecom connection possible at our place, but at my neighbor’s (who now has Street B No. 1) it was. But he doesn't even have a telecom connection (fiber optic through the municipal utilities). Cadastral maps, official letters with the house number assignment, and much more were ultimately necessary so that the telecom would believe that there's a connection from them in the house (a picture with the box is not enough for them to simply search in their system...). If you start with multiple house numbers now, it will definitely be a huge fiasco. Somewhere I also heard that for each house number you have your own garbage collection ^^ There was once a case where someone had 2 numbers on 2 streets and had to pay twice.

Ok, you convinced me. I'd rather take just a house number.
