Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago we were in a new housing development where we saw this tree at the entrance area.
Who can tell us what kind of tree this is?

Also, we would like to know how winter-hardy it is, as it apparently even survived this cold winter without damage :)

In my opinion, this is a formal cut of a cypress or a similar evergreen tree. It would also be hardy in winter. Many things are possible with natural beauties – but unfortunately not here anymore.

I also believe that it is a type of cypress. We planted three on our property a few days ago. There are many beautiful varieties of it. The cypresses are supposed to be all winter-hardy.

In my opinion, it is a conifer that has been trimmed into a bonsai shape (different species are cultivated/pruned here). Since growing something like this is very labor-intensive, a tree of this size costs around EUR 1,500.

Yes, they are supposed to be expensive, as they are pruned over the years.

Best regards, Yvonne

That looks like juniper... If you google "juniper" and "Japanese," you will find beautiful examples in the image search. And it is absolutely hardy in winter.

Best regards, Steffi.
