Hello,

I am new here and have a few questions; unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything using the search function.

I would like to build a house using the timber frame construction method. Since we own a forest, I would like to fell the wood myself (bark beetle infestation) and then take it to the sawmill.

Does anyone here have experience with building using self-felled wood?

Is it necessary to plane the studs (I assumed 6/18)?

I have read from some prefabricated house suppliers that the studs are impregnated. Is this absolutely necessary? If yes, why is it necessary?

Is there anything against using wood affected by bark beetle?

The house will, of course, be erected by a carpenter.

How do the costs compare to a brick house?

Many thanks in advance for your feedback,
Max

If I have understood timber frame construction correctly, the correct residual moisture content is important. That means simply felling the wood and driving it to the sawmill is a bit short-sighted. And whether it will be cheaper I do not dare to judge, but in my opinion a wooden house is as expensive as a solid house. Both can of course vary in price depending on the type of construction and quality. Whether you save that much money on a shell made from your own wood, I cannot imagine at the moment.

I don't really know much about wood, but doesn't it have to rest for a while like a good steak first?

Thank you for your reply. That certainly does not settle it, that's true, the studs and roof frame, etc. should of course also go into the drying chamber so that they have the correct residual moisture (I had forgotten to mention that beforehand).

But this will eliminate the cost advantage. A company that dries large quantities technically will surely have different conditions.

You can simply sign up for a factory tour at a prefab house manufacturer / timber house builder. They always explain at length to potential customers how the wood is prepared so that it no longer moves or warps after installation. I mean, the drying process also removes all nutrients from the wood that could attract potential pests. And the impregnation, in my opinion, is not the same with all providers, especially not if they have committed themselves to "healthy living" construction. You can certainly also download some construction service descriptions online, some of which partially contain such information.
