Hello,

my Hopen bed from Ikea with the original slatted frame and mattress was last assembled after the most recent move. Unfortunately, it has been squeaking extremely since then. I have already tried everything, like applying oil to the wooden dowels and tightening the screws.

Unfortunately, it still squeaks and creaks with every movement. Do you have any tips on how to fix it, or is it possible that IKEA offers something to prevent a potential new purchase?! We just furnished half of the apartment and therefore have no money for a new bed...!

Best regards

Pat

Hello, before troubleshooting comes error analysis. You must first find out where the squeaking is coming from. Then you can consider how to eliminate it.

Hi,

as already tried to mention, the wooden dowels that connect the front as well as the rear end of the bed to the side parts are squeaking.
It makes sense somewhere because there are no other friction points.
Also, I noticed that the cylinders with the internal thread (diameter 7mm x 13mm length), which essentially act as the nuts for the long black screws, are already being pulled much deeper into the wood by the screw when tightening...!

Is there generally a solution for a squeaking bed?

I would replace the wooden dowels with new ones. Can the old ones be easily pulled out? What material is the side panel made of in the [Hopen] where the cross-threaded bolt is inserted?

The wooden dowels are firmly seated in the side panels and are only "loose" in the foot part. Although you still have to hit it pretty hard there to put it back together.

These side panels of the Hopen are made of wood, which also makes it possible for the cross-threaded bolts to bite so deep into the wood (when tightening)!

If it didn’t squeak before, I suspect that everything previously fit more tightly. Oil on the wooden dowels would probably be counterproductive. The dowels could be glued in the foot section, provided the oil does not prevent the glue from sticking. The bed could still be disassembled. If the side panels are not hollow and made of solid wood, I’m somewhat surprised that the cross-threaded bolts are pulled into the wood. Could the squeaking originate here as well? A bolt with a larger diameter in a drilled-out hole might perhaps improve the situation. Is the screw already screwed in all the way to the end of the thread? Then it should be replaced with one that has a longer thread. Could a second screw connection be introduced? Otherwise, ask the woodworkers in the forum. There are experienced carpenters there. I wouldn’t mention Ikea at all and only show pictures of the foot, side panels, and connections.
