Street without a sidewalk, what should we consider?

Hello everyone,

we have bought a plot of land and on both sides of the street there are no sidewalks. It is a small side village with about 50 houses and the street is a dead end.

A neighbor told me that the residents did not want a sidewalk during the development in 1970 and that is why the municipality waived it. However, 1.20m in front must be kept clear and you are not allowed to build your garden fence directly on the street. Currently, there are no garden fences in the entire street, even though the enclosure is actually required by the RVO in the development plan.

Since we have a dog, we definitely have to/want to put up a fence, but now we are unsure where we are allowed to put it and what we should do with the strip in front of it. We also want to pave the driveway and the sidewalk up to the front door up to the street.

Does anyone have something similar or does anyone have advice?

It's the same with us. We have fenced off a part for the dog with a picket fence and not the entire property. We left the utility strip free and visually designed it in three places with Grauwacke stones / small walls to make a transition to the property visible and so that hikers can sit down sometimes. It's no drama.

It's the same with my parents. The retaining wall is simply set slightly inward and the strip was gravelled for years and was eventually paved. Just set the fence 120cm inward and that's it.

Okay then it's not that unusual after all. Gravel in the front sounds good. I don't want any overgrowth there and don't want to have to mow manually all the time. A wall is too risky for me, since the effort to move it would be too great if it ends up being 1.5m after all. It'll probably be a double rod fence instead.

Sure, if a fence is enough, then that. My parents had to shore up the property, that would get really expensive.

So there really are still some rare gems.......

My former house also didn’t have a sidewalk......no shoveling snow in winter.......I liked that. Now we are building at the end of a dead end and again have none.
Given your described location, I wouldn’t worry about it.

we also had a dog......the fence maybe doesn’t have to go all the way to the front of the house.....or would you perhaps generally prefer a fence???? I think it’s great that the residential area gets by without fences, that also says something and surely some people have pets as well.
There was an interesting article about this on Spiegel-Online: "Doppelstab-Mattenzäun: Die sprießende Lieber der Gärtner zum Sichtschutzzaun."
If you search for that, you will find functional and beautiful solutions without such fences.
