Hello everyone,

I will have my property filled and leveled with 20-30cm of topsoil over the weekend.
Now I am reading more and more often to only sow when the temperature is above 10 degrees at night. That means I would have to wait until the end of April.
My question is, since I cannot postpone the date:

How long can the topsoil remain like this before weeds spread?
Can I wait the month without having to go on a weed hunt with a rake afterwards, or should I just start immediately with the roller and seed?

Best regards
Mateo

Cute. You won't be able to avoid weeding. Get used to it, it will be your favorite activity this year. You should wait a little longer before sowing. The seeds often need around 15 degrees and moisture. May is usually ideal in terms of temperature.

Really? Only sow in May? What would be the best way now? Have it heaped up and wait until the end of April? Do you think weeds are to be expected in the 4 weeks? I thought I would wait 4 weeks now and then rake over once, roll and sow. I am a complete beginner here. Best regards

The problem is that the lawn does not become dense overnight, but rather a dense root system builds up laboriously over years. During that time, you have to deal with weeds. After that, it gets somewhat easier, depending on how English you want your lawn to be. If you sow earlier, you run the risk that the young plants will die due to sudden frost. Just look at the weather forecast and see what the predictions are around mid-April.

Ah okay, that I generally have to remove weeds was clear to me, I referred to the soil that has been there for over 4 weeks. So that it doesn’t get any weeds and I have to put a lot of work into it again before the first sowing. Mouse from the perspective harmless?

You can cover the bed with cardboard. Then no light reaches the soil and less weed will germinate. But the fight against weeds starts shortly after sowing. You could dig a little deeper into your pocket and get turf. That then immediately covers the whole ground. But even there you will have to pull weeds for a flawless lawn. Overall, I find lawns rubbish. I threw mine out and planted flowers and wild meadow instead. Lawns are not low-maintenance. I don’t even know how it came about that lawn became the standard for a garden with so much work and cost.
