Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to replace the existing heating thermostats and radiator thermostats with smart ones. I am still undecided whether to go with Netatmo or Tado.

Initial situation: The living area in the old building extends over two floors, each with a separate floor heating system. Each heating system supplies 5 to 7 radiators on the respective floor. A common Wi-Fi is available across both floors.

Questions:
1. Can I combine both heating thermostats and all radiator thermostats in one overview in the app? Or do they have to be two separate "zones"? That would, of course, be somewhat less comfortable to handle.
2. I understand that the heating thermostats and radiator thermostats communicate via radio. Can this lead to incorrect assignment? What is the range?
3. Would it be a sensible option to keep the old "dumb" heating thermostats and only replace the radiator thermostats with smart ones?

Thank you in advance for your help. I would also be very happy about further tips & tricks regarding my project.

Best regards!

1. Yes and no, but in a higher-level instance everything could be arranged as desired. 2. No, the thermostats are learned and assigned as requested. The range depends on the local conditions. Wall thickness and structure, sources of interference, etc. 3. It depends on what the goal of the project is; one or the other approach may be the solution.

Thank you very much Mycraft.
1. So I can control everything simultaneously in one app, but not quite as comfortably as with just one heater?
2. It is an old building with about 25 to 50 cm thick brick walls. There are about 120 m² per floor. Understandably, a final assessment can only be made on a case-by-case basis with many details, but does it sound possible and reasonable?
3. The goal is to regulate the temperature precisely from a distance and set up automatisms, for example, turning up the radiator in the bathroom a bit just before the alarm clock or turning down the radiator with a window-open detection. We also hope for some savings in heating costs.

1. Ultimately, it depends on what exactly is used and how the whole thing is set up. It may be that everything or nothing works without experience and additional measures. Advertising sometimes conceals basic things; everything always looks great, but afterwards the question is what exactly you need to make it work just like that.

2. The wall thickness is sometimes problematic for radio signals. How is the WLAN coverage at the moment? Although both thermostats use 868 MHz, and this might work. You only know for sure when you try it.

3. Remote temperature control always sounds interesting until you deal with it and realize that it is only really necessary if you are away for a longer period (vacation). The precision usually suffers due to the sensor detection near the radiator. But for the average user, this is negligible.

4. An optimization of the heating system and the existing controller can also lead to some savings (if this has not already happened).

I doubt any savings since the heating continues to run even if you turn down the thermostat.
