Basically, I find shed dormers quite good for better utilization of an attic. Since there is no knee wall in my house, the front of the dormer would have to start flush with the house wall in order to gain more living space (i.e., floor area) on the upper floors. In order to achieve a flat ceiling surface (or at least headroom in the front area of the dormer), in my opinion the dormer would become relatively tall and thus look quite unharmonious. Am I seeing this correctly? In houses with an existing knee wall, shed dormers appear significantly more delicate and therefore blend much more nicely into the roof surface. For me, the question arises whether such a shed dormer (which should extend over the entire side of the house - recessed about 1 m on the right and left) on my settlement house with a roof pitch of about 50 degrees will become way too bulky. Maybe someone can help me. Regards

Hello,

Are you really talking about a shed dormer or rather a "standing dormer" or a cross gable?

As for the dimensions, you should first check the textual regulations of your development plan; the building authorities usually specify smaller dimensions. By the way, it also states whether and if so, what type of dormer/cross gable you are allowed to install.

Kind regards

It is then probably more of a dormer. The purpose would be to gain living space and to compensate for the missing knee wall. However, the front view would then probably be very bulky.

Hello,
I just came across the post because I am facing a similar "problem".

I would be interested to know what you decided on and how the view now appears?

Best regards
Michael
