Today, I heard about gold sand in screed for the first time. A small amount of gold dust is then mixed into the regular sand, which is supposed to significantly improve the heat distribution in the screed. The price is actually quite reasonable; the additional cost for about 160 m² is said to be around 400 euros.

I am rather skeptical about the whole thing and wanted to ask who among you has heard of it before and if anyone has more information? Especially whether a difference to normal screed can be noticed when using underfloor heating.

I don't know this, but for 400 euros for the 160 sqm, the gold distribution is extremely thin. I can't imagine that this significantly improves heat conduction (because a chemical reaction will hardly occur). If that worked, you could also use a cheaper, well-conductive material. Apart from that, a normal screed is absolutely sufficient to keep the room temperature fairly constant. What else is there to improve? What noticeable effect is that supposed to have?

And I thought of real sand from Bulgaria.. there is the best sand at the [Goldstrand], warmed over millennia and through its special property it still glows years afterward.

Those who believe that 2g of gold in 500kg of material should make a difference better have nothing to do with numbers. Otherwise, a case for a psychological report. Gold is also not the best conductor of heat. One could work with aluminum powder, which is cheap. That instead of sand would really bring the promised significant improvement. And you would have a visually cool floor covering.

Is there a reliable source for this? I don't think so.
