Found out today that due to the window size, we have to use roller shutter slats in aluminum design in the living room must. Apparently, we exceed the 4m² limit for window size. I somehow can't imagine that this is a strict value that has to be adhered to. I have looked at so many apartments before that apparently violate this guideline and had plastic slats. Furthermore, my parents have a huge living room window: 3mx1.5m = 6m². They have plastic slats and have had no problems (for years). Is this limit really in place? Should it be strictly observed? Does anyone have experience with roller shutter slats in plastic profile design for window sizes larger than 4m²? Upstairs we have plastic slats... Can you see the difference from outside? I think so. And don’t come at me saying the shutters are only down at night and you wouldn’t see it anyway... ... They can also be down during the day (for example, when we are on vacation). Background: Aluminum slats are much more expensive than the plastic version. Regards xdiver

Hello, I wouldn't experiment with plastic if the window maker advises against it. If the sun shines on it widthwise, they deform under their own weight. Then you can throw that stuff away and pay twice. It doesn't have to happen, but if it does, the trouble is big. Whether you can see it from the outside is a good question. It probably looks a bit different. But as long as the color stays the same, I find it undramatic.

In our current house, we have a roller shutter of about 6sqm. It has been working without problems since 2001, despite being made of plastic. However, in our new house, we will get roller shutters made of aluminum – there was no offer with plastic at all.

It all depends on the manufacturer of the tank and the roller shutter box... the manufacturer specifies the sizes for a reason...

So if they say that from 4sqm aluminum is required, then you have to take that, not because it is more expensive but because the manufacturer has most likely tested it and knows the limits of their product.

Why even plastic? There are more disadvantages than advantages.

I specifically ordered aluminum... the extra cost compared to the house price etc. is rather low.

What are the main disadvantages of plastic armor?

Aluminum shutters are:

More colorfast for longer, better burglary resistance, better stability (wind loads and deformation due to own weight), run especially more quietly in connection with motor operation (plastic shutters tend to "squeak" with motor operation), more durable (plastic may become brittle over the years and the slats "tear off" – in other words, the shutter breaks apart due to its own weight)
