Hello,
I intend to buy an older house. The location is ideal and we also like the surroundings. The house was built in 1987. During the viewing, I noticed black spots on the ceiling in the bathroom. I opened a spot on the ceiling and found glass wool underneath, which also shows black spots.

I suspect this is mold and now I have the question.
Do I have to remove this glass wool in all rooms?
Is it really harmful to health?

Addendum: I called a company and they said, without having seen the glass wool, that it is carcinogenic.

What do you think about this?

The glass wool from that time is of course not comparable to the material of today. At least from a thermal perspective. Have a cost estimate made and then you will know what financial expense you are facing. I would also classify it as already harmful to health.

In my opinion, it must be proven that this fine dust gets into the lungs. Everything else is speculation.

What I would also like to know is whether a vapor barrier is present?

Hello,
Here in the forum you will find some information about [Dachdämmung]. You just have to read up on it. But a proper planning is still the be-all and end-all. If you are unsure, you also have to commission an expert to conduct the inspection.
Best regards

Approach the matter differently and take a close look at the [Unterspannbahn]. Or ask roofers or carpenters, because they know what I mean. They will say until this was used.

So if I suspect something, I also want to know exactly. Just take a sample and have it examined. Then you will know for sure whether it is mold or not.

If that is not the case, then I wonder why you want to replace the glass wool. If the right material was installed, in my opinion there are no health problems. Don't drive yourself crazy.

As already mentioned, take a sample and have it examined, then you will have certainty.
