Or where does the general contractor select the samples?

That is meant very seriously and pretty much reflects my experience so far with building a house. With EL, we either saved money while maintaining the same quality or treated ourselves to better quality. For example, you can consider whether to invest the savings on your interior doors in better doors or save directly. Or whether you can afford a parquet floor by laying it yourself instead of the laminate floor. That was the point of my statement. Despite the urge to save, you still want to end up owning the nicest possible little house.
