Hello,

I have a low 80cm high wall on the terrace towards the neighbor. It is intended to serve as a privacy screen in the future. I want to raise it step by step. So low at the front and then getting higher until the house wall. If you remove the wall cap, the old wall is nice and straight and filled with concrete. So I have a good "foundation" on which I want to set the new wall stones.

The question now is: Can I simply connect the new stones to the old ones with mortar without fearing that they might topple over due to strong wind or something similar? If not, what is the best way to do it?

Do I have to install reinforcement steel in the "small" wall or is it enough to fill the formwork stones with concrete?

The wall is to end at about 1.90m height at the house wall. We live on a slope right by the field. So the wind can really whip around the house.

Thank you very much for your tips!

A picture is worth more than words......, that makes it easier.

Yikes, I wouldn’t want to set a nearly 2-meter high, freestanding concrete wall myself, aside from the fact that I don’t want such a structure. If it’s about privacy screening, you could create that much more easily, cheaply, and also more nicely.

Why wouldn’t you want to do that yourself? And regarding the want or not thing, luckily tastes differ... I’m really curious about your suggestions for a simple, cheap, and nicer alternative!!?

I just don’t want to look at an almost 2-meter-high wall, which would also mean a not exactly easy-to-build structure. I haven’t given it much thought yet, but for example, you could maybe screw 4 beams against the existing wall and then you would already have a basic frame that you could fill in between as you like. I once posted a picture here showing how to do it cheaply. So afterwards, for example, you could screw battens or cheap boards in the desired color/look/even different widths horizontally onto the beams, similar to the expensive rhombus slats but simply with cheap battens or rough-sawn, not too wide boards. You could also hang flower boxes on them or whatever you like. Or just place wide, black mortar buckets covered with wood along the wall and plant and let them grow up along the built fence elements. Likewise, you could stretch wire and let it grow over, etc. Before giving it more thought, you would have to know what your taste is and maybe we are completely different in that and then it wouldn’t make any sense. A 2-meter-high wall definitely has to be built safely so that it doesn’t fall over, so anchored somewhere, etc., which I, as an amateur, didn’t want to decide. With such a solution, the currently shabby wall would be gone as well, and you wouldn’t have to repair or paint the plaster more often and, in my opinion, you could make it friendlier. With wood or another light natural material, plants in between, or openings for lighting, etc., imagination has no limits and you don’t have to worry about any static issues. Depending on your needs, you could also add a partial pergola or seating areas could be between the plant boxes at the lower level. All of this can be done with inexpensive wood and can look really stylish and individual.
