Hello everyone,

I have two lawns:

- The 1st lawn was established two years ago
- The 2nd lawn was established last year

After the winter, the lawn now looks like this (see attachment). Now I want to properly care for the lawn. For this, I want to get a scarifier. I have the following models in my shortlist:

1. Gardena EVC 1000
2. Gardena ES 500
3. Husqvarna S 138C

If I understand correctly, I can only aerate and scarify the lawn with the Husqvarna. For the Gardena models, the EVC 1000 is for scarifying and the ES 500 is for aerating.

Am I correct in assuming that the 2nd lawn (established last year) is still too young to scarify and that I should only aerate it?

I would like to hear your advice on which model you would choose and if anyone already has experience with one of the three.

Thanks & regards
Jörg

I would: first (mow if necessary, then) fertilize and wait about 14 days. If it has not recovered after that: rent a scarifier, go over it crosswise, and then overseed with the same seed mixture and keep it moist. But the general recommendation is: fertilize first (strengthen the lawn) then scarify (= stress for the lawn).

Lawn care is a chapter in itself (even experts do not agree on it.) Aeration/scarifying is "normally" not necessary. Fertilizing/liming and "mowing until the doctor comes." Robotic mowers around the clock or once a week by hand. Of course, don't forget water. How have the lawns been treated in recent years, or in the last year? None.

Fertilized twice a year and otherwise mowed regularly (with a catcher basket) but since I am switching to a robotic mower this year, I fear that due to mulching the lawn will become too thatchy without aeration/dethatching.

Neighbor with his "Wembleyrasen" mows the lawn once in spring with a petrol mower and then lets the Robi run.
As mentioned, fertilizing/liming/mowing/watering.

Very important is the autumn fertilizer so that the lawn gets through the winter well.

Mow best daily. Once a week is too little.
[Vertikutieren] is only necessary for large new installations.
[Aerating] makes sense.
Your lawn currently looks like mine. It could be snow mold. So not critical. As soon as it gets warmer, the lawn will come back. Possibly overseed a little.
Important are fertilizer (best every 2-4 weeks a small amount), water and mowing.
I also only mulch. Doesn’t matter if [Robi] or with the other mowers. No more matting. The clippings decompose.
