Property development of a staircase towards the street

Good day.

As can be seen in the picture, we built a staircase to the street 27 years ago. For whatever reason, we built a little beyond the boundary stone back then.
These days, two friendly police officers pointed this out to us and said that it probably needs to be removed. We will likely receive this in writing as well.
Now my question is, although I am of course aware that they are right, I am hoping for some kind of statute of limitations or customary law. The demolition does not pose any insurmountable problems for me now, but I am reluctant to tear into a structure that has been very stable for years.
Is there any possibility, or am I still going to have to tear it down?

Good evening. Show me the course of the cobblestones along the street. Is that a sidewalk/pavement? And if it is, what does the nice police have to do with it? Has someone stumbled there? Has there been a complaint? Basically, the municipality is responsible.

No, the footpath is on the opposite side. I also can't explain why the police complained about it.

I consider that to be pretentiousness. If there should actually be a letter, I would first kindly talk to the municipality, explaining that you maintain and keep the connection to the traffic route in good order for the benefit of the city.

In my opinion, a dismantling only becomes relevant if the municipality itself needs the centimeters. But then, I don't think you have to worry about having to provide the excavator.

There is no customary law or similar for properties. For example, someone who has allowed their neighbor to drive over their property for 40 years and has no right of way registered in the land register in their favor can revoke this at any time.
