Our new house (built in 2011) was constructed with thermal insulation bricks. Inside and outside, it was plastered with a breathable plaster. We now have a very good indoor climate and good thermal insulation, but unfortunately we have to be horrified to find that our exterior walls hardly dampen external noise. Especially the gable walls, which stand perpendicular to the street, seem to catch the external noise and then amplify it like a resonance body. If you press your ear against such an exterior wall when a car passes by, it feels as if the car is DRIVING INSIDE the wall. We have contacted the manufacturer of the bricks about this problem. Such a soundproofing issue is not known there so far. Has anyone had similar experiences with thermal insulation bricks? What have you done to improve the sound insulation afterwards? We would be very grateful for tips.

Hello,
Is there no sound insulation certificate? In addition, it would be necessary to clarify whether it is structure-borne noise (transmitted via the floor/foundations) or airborne noise.

Best regards

No, there is no sound insulation certificate. Should there even be one? Who arranges it? Who carries it out? What does it cost and what does it bring? How can one determine whether it is structure-borne sound or airborne sound? Our experts (architect, construction company, structural engineer, brick manufacturer) just leave us alone with the problem. Purely mathematically, the brick should provide sufficient sound insulation due to its weight, or what can be heard at our place should actually not be audible at all. But it is simply the case that you can have a conversation through an exterior wall.

Hello,

If by "thermal insulation bricks" you mean perlite- or mineral-filled hollow bricks and these were also installed, the cause "could" be missing or improperly installed edge strips. These are laid down before pouring the screed to avoid sound bridges. I once had a customer in Düsseldorf who simply cut off these edge strips during the site cleanup.

A sound insulation report is prepared by the structural engineer and costs around EUR 3,000-4,000 and is necessary when a special sound insulation value is prescribed.

From how it reads, you will not be able to avoid hiring an external building expert to investigate the cause of the noise nuisance. In a finished house, many causes can be considered; missing edge strips are just one example. With the results available after the inspection, you can then also pressure your supplier; unless you have also cut off the edge strips yourself.

Best regards

Thermal insulation bricks always have much poorer sound insulation than conventional bricks. This is due to the nature of the matter, or rather the stone, as it has much less mass. With a stone thickness of 36.5 cm and top thermal insulation U value of approximately 0.20 (T or W 07 or 08), you can expect a sound insulation of about 43 dB (at best 45 dB). That is not much and actually allows you to talk through the wall. Such a brick basically consists primarily of air... Nevertheless, defects may exist that have worsened the situation, and these should be examined by an expert, preferably one who is sworn in and publicly appointed.

That's right! Maximum sound insulation (airborne sound) and maximum thermal insulation are physically mutually exclusive! Therefore, it is not impractical to combine the advantages of individual components according to their respective strengths in the overall construction of the exterior wall, i.e., a monolithic structure is rarely the most effective overall!
