Hello everyone,

we have currently detected a very strange problem with the LAN cable of our outdoor camera. If I am in the wrong subforum here, please move this.

At our new build, we had the electrician install a laying cable with a Keystone module outside on the facade.

A few days ago, I then installed a POE camera on it. Initially, everything worked completely fine.

However, since rain was forecast for yesterday and my waterproof box was only supposed to arrive today, I protected the LAN connection from the weather with a plastic bag.
During the day, the camera suddenly lost its connection. A check showed that unfortunately some moisture had gotten into the bag.

Now the strange thing:
I tested the camera on another LAN port in the house. Here, the camera immediately powers on again and runs flawlessly.

I then connected my laptop to the outdoor cable via LAN to test whether the Keystone module / the cable might have been damaged. But this connection also works flawlessly and the laptop accesses the internet. Only POE apparently no longer works here.

If I now reconnect the camera to the original outdoor cable, the camera cannot establish a connection.

Could there still be moisture in the cable? But it was really only a short time and very little moisture. Therefore, I don’t think something corroded so quickly, especially since all components, as mentioned, still work individually.

What else can I do against possible residual moisture?
The cable is outside but weather-protected. Just let it dry in the air?

I’m really at a loss as to what to do now.
Cutting the cable and attaching a new Keystone module would be my last option, but I’m not really familiar with that and the electrician did it before.

Or is the connection possibly completely broken?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Best regards

Christian

Let it dry and hope it works again. Maybe it just fried the power supply of your network port. But let it dry before you try another port.

Old keystone off, shorten the cable a bit and attach the new keystone. If the keystone has gotten moisture, you can expect it to corrode. Also replace the LAN cable on the camera. Just watch some videos on the internet. Keystone is easy to install.

As it sounds, it is more likely to be a wire break. Installation cables are rigid and due to your handling, a wire is probably broken (possibly it was already damaged by previous work). Shorten the cables/wires a bit and reconnect them. You can also try gently pulling on the wire ends with needle-nose pliers after disassembly. If one immediately comes loose, you have found the culprit.
