Hello

we have a newly built semi-detached house

all walls and ceilings will be finished with Q2 plaster

we do not want to use wallpaper but rather plaster and paint the walls or use colored plaster.

How can we make the walls look nice DIY?

we would plaster the walls as well as we can with putty to make them as smooth as possible

What should I do afterwards, just paint? or what do you think about textured paint? or what can you recommend?

First of all, Q2 is already plastered. What kind of plaster are you getting (lime cement, gypsum, clay)? I also have Q2, namely gypsum plaster. It is already mostly so smooth that even my picky wife said it’s smooth enough for her. I said somewhere else here that it is as smooth as a shaved middle-aged man’s butt. Which doesn’t sound very flattering but for a wall, it is quite smooth and at least without orange peel and pimples. Here and there you certainly have to sand a bit, but overall I am sure that with one or two coats of decent paint I can get something looking good. I have been told that there is also Q2 that is more like an 80-year-old butt. Or a pimpled teenage butt. Such plaster can then be treated right away with a roller plaster that forgives smaller unevennesses. A baby-butt smooth plaster you probably only get with multiple layers of filling and sanding and painter’s fleece, especially with lime cement or clay plaster, which is more difficult to work with.

I don't know exactly how they are plastered. We only know that everything is filled with Q2.

On the internet, you always read that Q2 is only suitable for wallpaper; for painting, you need at least Q3.

I have seen Q2 walls at acquaintances, and there were a lot of holes in them, so nothing worked without additional filling.
Maybe that was also an extreme example that I saw.

So if you want texture, you should go for roll plaster, and if you want it without texture, possibly fill and sand over Q2 and then paint, right?

As said, with gypsum plaster you can be lucky and depending on the requirement, you don’t need to fill and only very little sanding is necessary.
Take another look at the scope of work description or ask your builder/general contractor.
Roll plaster is also available with very fine grain, which I wouldn’t even call texture. It’s just not completely smooth, but rather rougher. However, fine plaster again doesn’t mask unevenness (if there are any) that well.

A "poor" Q2 must also be sanded and filled before wallpapering if you want to apply a smooth wallpaper. Uneven Q2 is then only good for textured wallpaper.

Look - Feel - then decide. Q2,3,4, are sometimes just numbers in the end...... As an idea, I also suggest [Streichputz], which we will use, for example, on the ceiling.

And don't overlook that smoothness, or whatever you want to call it, comes in all sizes. With us, the Q2 plaster is also super smooth in small areas when you place your hand on it. But when you look at it on a larger scale, slight waves appear over the entire surface. This can only be seen with a straightedge or rather with grazing light.
