Hello garden lovers,

we have our wastewater cistern at the front part of the property by the street.

Now I am planning the design of the front garden: among other things, I would like to have at this spot - not exactly, but in this area - a so-called house tree, possibly a red maple or another type of tree that can grow about 4 to 6 meters tall.

Does anything stand in the way of this plan or can the root system harm the concrete cistern? I was thinking of planting about 1 meter away from the concrete lid.

Kind regards
Yvonne

Well, I would be careful there. From experience, the tree will eventually have its roots in the cistern. The smallest crack at the inlet or outlet and it starts growing in there. And then you have a mess. I have the same problem - three lids in the front yard. (We were forced by the state of Saxony to install 2 firefighting water cisterns. Plus the sewage KKA.) I thought I'd plant a lot of ornamental grasses around it. Then they should mostly disappear. But I definitely won't plant a tree.

or others: Are there any ideas for the few square meters around our cistern?

The strip would be 3 meters deep, in front of it there are then infiltration basins (grassed over) from the municipality.

Friends of ours have created a rock garden with light stones around and on the shaft. The plants they placed there are "buried" in solid pots and covered with the stones. This way, they can hardly or not at all root into the surrounding soil.

Because the light stones cover both the pots and the infiltration shaft, nothing of it can be seen anymore.

Best regards Stefan
