Planning a dimmer - still relevant?

Hello,

we are currently working on the lighting planning. We are considering installing a fixed dimmer for the living/dining room lighting. The problem is that not all lamps, especially "Smart"-enabled lamps, might be compatible with it. Should we rather opt for a "classic" switch and move the dimming intelligence towards the lamp?

What is your opinion?

I built for the second time at 50 and would like to still be able to operate the light switches when I get a bit shaky. From the intensive experience with my own and my parents-in-law, I assume that the time will come when I will no longer understand technical matters well. In my opinion, a simple light switch is the easiest to manage for the longest time. Therefore: Even with wonderful technologization, allow the simplest operation possible.

And then every time you want to dim your light in the living room, you have to search for your smartphone, unlock it, load the app, let the app connect, and then be lucky that no update interferes? I’m totally into tech stuff, but either I control my lamps via the wall or directly via sensors. Being forced to use an app is out of the question for me, so: light switches (whether dumb, semi-dumb, or smart).

... Alexa makes everything possible. Either with the appropriate bulbs or, for example, via Shellys. Of course, you have to like it.

If you are into Alexa, a lot is possible. I am not a fan of it.

There are supposed to be lamps that you can dim without an app (Philips SceneSwitch, for example). The question is rather whether you should "box yourself in" later by potentially using "smart" lamps that are not compatible with a dimmer switch.
