Hello,

We recently had our steel stringer staircase (raw condition) installed in a rust-brown color. We want to do the painting ourselves.

Should I sand the surface beforehand, and if so, with a sander or would it also work by hand?

Or should we apply the primer right away and then the paint?

Would appreciate your help!

Best regards, andi

No sanding, just dusting off. Then step a] apply Owatrol cip. Let it dry well. b] a solvent-based alkyd resin paint in the color of your choice. Rust will never break through. Waage Farben Hamburg has a website where you will find what you need. Karsten

As a final coat, I recommend cip Hempel brilliant gloss. Waage currently has the can for 27,-. You will be amazed, if you are used to obihormbachbauhaus, how well the colors cover, flow, and can be painted. A different league, really. Karsten

It has been done this way with us for more than 3 decades.

Everything was washed to remove grease and other dirt.
Then painted with the desired color and that was it.

The paint is still on it.

That can be done indoors. With the cip you achieve significantly better adhesion. and since it is as thin as primer, it is quickly dry. Karsten

The brown is already the primer. So just remove any drips and then apply the paint on top.
