Paint mineral exterior plaster once or twice

Hello everyone,

soon the exterior plaster will be applied here (thermal insulation composite system made of rigid foam insulation boards). It is a mineral topcoat with a 3mm grain size. According to the building description, it will be painted once with white paint (standard service).

However, the craftsman recommends painting twice for an additional cost because of
- longer durability
- longer effectiveness of the fungicide in the paint

and especially because of the thermal insulation system, as the plaster is more susceptible to moisture due to the polystyrene cladding.

What do you think about this, how often was it painted for you? Thank you in advance for the answers and opinions.

I am not aware that any white exterior plaster has been painted in our new development area. It concerns about 70 houses

We had the leveling coat applied. The additional cost was low.

We had the equalizing coat applied. The additional cost was low.

This then makes sense if the exterior plaster is to be colored; the equalizing coat prevents – simply put – a blotchy facade.

I assume that the painter of the OP recommended a second coat solely to sell a fungicidal-algicidal treatment. It should be noted here that this additive – whether chemically or ecologically harmless – will be washed out by rain over the years.

What I can’t quite understand is why a mineral exterior plaster should be applied over an ETICS. From a stability standpoint, in my opinion a synthetic resin plaster would be the better choice.

Even better would be a mineral fine scratch plaster, then you neither need to apply chemicals nor repaint it
