Good day,

I would like to construct the fire protection zone around the oven cassette with a glass plate that is to rest on parquet laid deeper. The glass plate should be recessed into the floor so that the top edge of the glass plate is flush with the surrounding floor. For this purpose, the screed layer should already take into account the thickness of the glass plate (about 12mm?). The glass plate will then lie on the parquet laid 12mm deeper.

Has anyone here done something like this and can give me tips on what to consider? In particular, I am interested in the following points:

Which glass plate did you choose (structure)?
How are the edges of the glass plate designed?
How much gap do you have between the parquet and the glass plate?

Thank you in advance for helpful tips.

Best regards,

Merlin

Hi,

we have a glass panel on the fireplace that lies in the corner on the parquet. This was also custom-made and approved.

In the old rental apartment, the corner was tiled and then the parquet started. Whether glass is recommended, I don't know. At least it would have to fit so that no dirt, lint, etc. gets underneath.

We had that planned once too - you have to know very precisely how the part is positioned and what the dimensions are.

In the end, we didn't do it anymore - although it really bothers me to lay a glass plate "like that" now.

Another alternative would be to cover the entire living room with wood-look tiles. This is then automatically correct for the chimney sweep. Or you could tile around the fireplace and have parquet for the rest. A glass pane or something similar in transparent will collect dirt from below sooner (very likely) or later, which you won’t be able to remove again. Whether parquet or tile is higher depends on what you choose. The most elegant option would probably be if both are ± 1 mm at the same height. If you only place a glass pane at the end, then do it so that you can also remove it with the built-in fireplace (so the fireplace does not stand on the pane!). Otherwise, you won’t be able to remove the pane for cleaning. P.S.: A lot of fine dust and such really collects in front of the fireplace, and the tiles in front of the fireplace have already paid for themselves twice with us.

My recommendation would rather be towards a granite slab. Glass has the disadvantage that it gets scratched over time and you can't get rid of so-called thunderbugs underneath. In addition, with granite it is not necessary to level the screed. The location of the stove must be clear, no matter what kind of slab is chosen, because the prescribed size of the slab depends on that. The stove installer knows that. So I would have the slab laid first, so that a transition profile to the parquet is prepared around it. Then the parquet is laid and the joints between the slab and the parquet are closed with the cover of the profile. The advantage is that the slab can be easily replaced if necessary.

Wood-look tiles.... well, you just have to like them. Tiled backsplashes before them as well... don’t always match visually.

I will probably only lay tiles in front during the cold season, otherwise nothing in front...

In any case, it’s a nice coordination test - with many possibilities for things to go wrong .
