Outdoor area, slope towards the neighbor, how to frame?

Hello everyone,

we are currently working on our outdoor area behind the house.
We have a sloping property below the street. It is quite steep down to the neighbor, and we are a bit puzzled about what to do with the edge at the top. We have fairly solid clay soil; slipping would probably never happen there. We will also plant ground cover on the slope itself.
And the question now is, what can be done at the edge down to the neighbor? Some trees are planned, but what would you do?
A wall? A fence? Metal sheets? Curb stones? Just leave it as it is and let the grass grow?
We also have a child, so there is naturally a certain risk of falling.

Thanks in advance, pictures attached.
Best regards

I would plant the slope with ground cover and additionally secure it with mats. Otherwise, a heavy rain in the next 2 years might cause everything to slide. Especially since the flat area is still quite compacted and cannot absorb much water. Even with us, water still stands in places after 1.5 years. Despite sanding, despite sunflowers in the first summer, despite slitting. Clay is simply not very permeable. In 2018, when everything was new, during a storm the water ran over the wall like a waterfall.

I am not sure about the drainage of your property and whether anything still needs to be done.

You will have to decide about the fence. You know your child. I would build without a fence and plant the area towards the neighbors with hedges and smaller trees. Possibly a bird protection hedge; no one goes through there anymore, even without a fence.

Thank you for the response. Ground cover is probably our choice, we are working on it now. I also agree not to put up a fence at the top. My husband was still considering it, we'll see. I also think it looks nicer when you work with bushes and hedges.

Yes, the soil is really not very permeable. I need to ask the neighbors if they had a problem there.

I think once everything has grown in, there will be no problems. During the one storm in 2018, nothing came over the old slope with the old wall. The ground absorbed everything. The new installation turned into a waterfall. It will probably take a few years until the ground is sufficiently rooted and can properly absorb the water. Did the construction company that modeled the site say anything about it?

If not, put up a fence (man satisfied) and greenery in front of it so that you no longer see the fence.

The construction company said about this: the landscaper has to do that, from here we are done ☹️ Well, we'll manage. I just find a fence unnecessarily expensive if you don't need it.

Let's see. Junior won't just fall down. And if he does, he'll land in the garden of the very nice neighbors

Well, if it's about light securing, then one could also, for example, put up a picket fence!? They also look good and are relatively inexpensive. It could be a possible alternative and you can nicely plant something in front of it!
