Currently, we are in the kitchen planning phase and the wall between the kitchen and dining area is to be removed. How do you approach this issue? The wall is about 17.5 cm thick, and above the wall is the wall of the upstairs bathroom.

Can you remove any wall on the property, even if it is load-bearing?
Is a double steel beam always sufficient?
Or is it absolutely necessary to hire a structural engineer?

Thanks to you all!!

Lastdrop gets straight to the point!

Based on your information, it can be assumed that this wall is likely load-bearing. The wall thickness and the fact that another wall is above it speak for this; the exact information will be provided by the structural engineer. He will also calculate which beam/lintel you need to install there and what supports it requires.

Of course, you can install a significantly oversized beam, but the question then is which one is considered oversized. So you should definitely have this calculated by a structural engineer. Should the breakthrough be carried out on your own or by a company (they usually have a structural engineer on hand).

Thanks for the reply, we would do it ourselves, but of course we don’t want to take any risks. So I will look for a structural engineer… How much can such a calculation cost, approximately?!!
