What detailed knowledge are you missing? Would an overall photo, for example, help? Many thanks for your answer!

Is the same crack also inside?

Otherwise, as the saying goes, "impossible is nothing."

To basically all questioners: yes, context is always helpful to classify situations. How "much" more I could then say is hard to speculate. In any case, as said, the disappearance of the crack when bracing the parapet is only a "collateral benefit," which does not eliminate the cause of the crack. It is also important: the measure is statically irrelevant only if the opening is not intended to be widened, meaning the lintel and its supports on both sides remain unchanged.

Thank you! What exact detailed knowledge would you need? A photo of the whole or a plan of the house? Many thanks.

No, it should not be widened, only extended downwards. Thank you!

I had one, but he is not a structural engineer either and said he believes the house has settled to the right over the years. He suspected that the crack has been there for a long time because otherwise it wouldn’t be so wide. I don’t know if all that is true. That’s why I wanted to ask a professional before having the window installed. As I said, sorry, I simply have no idea about it.
