Hello dear community,

We are currently in the middle of building a house and wanted to keep our old water meter pit (built in 1950?), which has now been partially collapsed by a truck during construction. I received a compensation offer today for the construction of a new one:

"Dismantle and dispose of the existing masonry shaft. Supply and install a new shaft made of 2 concrete rings DN 1000 with a ladder, 1 cone, and cover, loadable up to 1.5 tons. Construct a concrete shaft floor."

for 620 € gross.

How much will we approximately save considering the damage? Is the offer okay?

Thanks & have a nice weekend

What, please, is a water meter pit, or what am I supposed to imagine under that?

Rhenish greetings from the road

Hello construction expert, I assume this is a shaft where the water meter is located. I have such a shaft too.

According to the previous owner of my property, the water meter in our area was placed outside the house, for which a shaft was built either with masonry or precast concrete elements. It was coated with bitumen both on the outside and inside. We later demolished the old building and wanted to have the meter installed inside the new house – statement from the water utility – it would then cost 6000 EUR... because of extending the pipes, etc., so we decided to leave the shaft as it is and that’s it. Reading the meter is possible without having to go through the house. In summer, it can also be used perfectly as a "cooling room".

Hello! Do you even have any leeway there? In our case, the water meter is installed by the water utility company / waterworks.
