Good morning everyone,

we would like to build our house soon in the beautiful Westerwald… Since we are owners of a large dog, we need a fence when we move in.

We have a 1200 m² plot - undeveloped plots on the left/right - forest at the back - in front/driveway "construction road"...

Now the question arises for me, can we already put up the fence (on the boundary) that we want towards the construction road, or would it be advisable to wait? Of course, we could also put up an "improvised" fence…
By construction road I mean that there are no sidewalks yet and partly gravel...

Since we would put the fence on "our" boundary, it shouldn't be in the way of the road builder… or should it? If it is, what would happen then?

Thank you very much for your help!

Since the dog later risks stepping in some dirt on the construction site and getting injured, I would not fence the entire property but a secure part in the later garden area.

Theoretically, it should work, but practically, you shouldn't be surprised if the fence gets knocked down at some point. That would, of course, be the fault and responsibility of the person causing it, but you'd still have to deal with the hassle. Isn't it enough to section off an area behind the house that is safe for dogs?

I think I caused some confusion above …
Of course, we would only put up the fence once the house is ready to move into.

But as you both already wrote, it would probably be better to fence off part of it first...
I would probably have to deal with the running back and forth sooner or later anyway, since you never really know when the road will be expanded... with my girlfriend or rather her parents' house, it took nearly 20 years :-O

But thanks again for your answers... it definitely helped us!

What would be an alternative where you initially keep some distance from the construction road with the fence? Either permanently or just until it is finished, and then the last section of the fence is added? It also depends on the desired fence!?

I wouldn't put up a fence along the street yet, because the height probably won't be exactly right later and the fence will probably get scratched. I also wouldn't create a specially secured area, that would be too much extra work for me, especially since you have to build something very sturdy for a large dog. Our dog wouldn't be the least bit willing to sit alone in a fenced garden area in the blazing sun.

Best regards
