Hello!

I recently moved into an apartment and discovered mildew as well as mold while renovating. Now my question to you: Is the damage borderline (see photos), should I insist on repairs or rather move out? Can I handle it myself?

My rental company (Annington) is known for not doing much in case of mold damage... :-(

I moved into the apartment in an emergency situation,
my ex kicked me out and I would have been basically homeless.
It is really hard to find apartments here.

In the bathroom at the skylight

In the living room directly next to the window/heater, mildew on the sloping ceiling

Directly to the left next to the sloping ceiling with mildew. There is a hole in the windowsill; a musty smell rises there.

In the bedroom on the window frame

Wow, that already looks pretty serious. Mold always comes from moisture, and that makes me wonder what you want to do yourself? Painting over it/filling it in. It will keep coming through as long as the cause is not eliminated. Also, something like that can backfire. Imagine you try to fix it yourself and fail, then your landlord might say the damage was caused by you and charge you for the repair costs. I would point this out to the landlord and politely but firmly ask for the damage to be repaired. Also, in most cases, you can withhold part of the rent, especially with mold, which poses a significant health risk. But in your place, I would consult a legal advisor. You can get legal advice more cheaply than from a lawyer at tenant associations or tenant protection agencies. Alternatively, I would also look for a new place and move out if the landlord is uncooperative.

Hello,

We also had the problem of mold formation in the bedroom. Despite constant ventilation, it kept appearing again and again. Since we live in an old building apartment and did not want to completely renovate everything, we ultimately decided to combat it using a dry ice blaster. This method is very gentle and leaves no residues because dry ice is used. The measure may sound very radical, but only through professional help were we able to remove the mold in our bedroom.

Regards,
Sarah

That someone would want to rent something like that?!

Find something else soon! (if you already know that your landlord does not care about renovation... because that can become quite expensive)

But first, join a tenant association, the 60 € per year are well spent, and then, in consultation with a lawyer, reduce the rent there. It doesn't make sense to pay the full rent until you have something new.

no that is a tenant legend.... we had a mold problem and were able to reduce the rent by 30% since it was not totally critical. in the apartment it was clearly mold. The whole building is currently affected because they only replaced the windows but not the exterior walls.... and they are so cold that water condenses on the tiles in winter when you cook pasta. The old windows provided sufficient ventilation.... but who likes to listen to a tenant who ventilates wrong anyway. We didn’t care, because we moved into our own house 6 months later. The tenant association was still worth it, because we reduced the rent 6 times by 250€. That then paid for the furniture for the new dining room
