We have purchased a plot of land and want to build a log cabin on it, which we do not intend to live in permanently. Since there is a depression at the intended building site, the ground needs to be raised by about 75 cm. We have already brought in enough gravel, but now hear from the architect that the natural soil must be excavated to a depth of 30 cm (sand under 10 cm of light topsoil). Wouldn't a properly compacted gravel layer be sufficient to build a foundation slab on? The floor area is 60 m² and the log beams are only 70 mm thick. Who has experience in this field?
