Nevertheless, I would always ask a structural engineer. You never know what has already been removed and what you might want to remove in the future. Maybe the house won’t collapse if you take down one wall, but then maybe with the next small corner in 10 years, or indeed, because someone removed something 20 years earlier. Having a structural engineer take a look really doesn’t cost the earth and simply provides security. We also had holes in such a wall because of new water pipes, which we bricked up again. As quickly as possible. I am not at all risk-tolerant with these things. Usually, there’s a huge loan tied to such a house, and I wouldn’t want to jeopardize that over €150 for the structural engineer.
