We are currently working on the floor plan for a bungalow. In that bungalow, we have a rectangular kitchen/living area which can be entered through two doorways on one long side of the rectangle (approximately 6x8m). Now we were considering whether this room could be entered via a step (downwards). The terrain slopes slightly downward from the entrance toward the mentioned room, but probably not by a whole step (16/17cm). How would such a construction be implemented, and what consequences would it have (especially in terms of cost)?

Without necessity, I would not install a tripping hazard for young and old.

Most would try to build as barrier-free as possible, as far as possible.

Others need to comment on technical and price-related issues.

This is a so-called split-level; it creates an interesting perspective inside, but unfortunately – due to the earthworks – it is also an expensive option to build a single-family house. Depending on the soil conditions, between EUR 10,000 and 15,000 can easily be added on for the size of the "lower" level. Rhine regards

One step:
can look good when it is separated. I would therefore definitely not do it for the main living area, where you are forced to overcome this hurdle many times a day because it is in the traffic route – if at all, only to a fireplace corner or another separate area that you do not visit very often and if so, then with care.

At first glance, much too long and unnecessarily long hallway, but a cramped dining area.

Thank you for the feedback. The earthworks alone should not be particularly expensive if we are talking about an additional 10-15cm here. Does anyone know how that would/could work with the [Bodenplatte]?

Then why do you ask, since you are the expert?

Rhineland greetings
